Hiking in Alfred Wegener´s footsteps - Uummannaq

On this trip you will be on the very same route as Alfred Wegener, the famous polar researcher, the one that came up with the theory of Continental drift.

You will see amazing sights, fantastic scenery and historical places. You will meet local people, eat Greenlandic food and spend the night with locals learning about their lifestyle. You will also have an extraordinary experience, sleeping on top of the inland ice. This trip is sure to be an adventure of a lifetime.

  • The temperature can change pretty quickly so is better if you dress in layers for the hike to make sure you are prepared.

Cancellation policy

  • We will charge a cancellation fee of 75% if booking is cancelled 5 days or less before the event
  • We will charge a cancellation fee of 50% if booking is cancelled 15 days or less before the event
  • We will charge a cancellation fee of 35% if booking is cancelled 21 days or less before the event
  • We will charge a cancellation fee of 10% if booking is cancelled 70 days or less before the event
DAY 1: Arrival to Uummannaq

On this trip you will be on the very same route as Alfred Wegener, the famous polar researcher, the one that came up with the theory of Continental drift.
You will see amazing sights, fantastic scenery and historical places. You will meet local people, eat Greenlandic food and spend the night with locals learning about their lifestyle.
You will also have an extraordinary experience, sleeping on top of the inland ice. This trip is sure to be an adventure of a lifetime.

DAY 2: Sailing, Settlement visit

You’ll start sailing to Ukkusissat, where Alfred Wegener once prepared to go to the Inland Ice.
Next you will travel to Appat (old settlement), sightseeing along the way.
Here you will have lunch just as Alfred Wegener once did.
After this, you will arrive to Ukkusissat, and sightsee around with a local guide and visit the place where you can collect Ukkusissat (soapstone) exactly where Alfred Wegener did. You will finish your day having dinner with the locals and spending the night with them.

DAY 3: Sailing to the start point of the hike

The next day you will start with a delicious local breakfast, sharing with the local people and experiencing their lifestyle.
Then, prepare yourself to start sailing to Qaamarujuk Fiord.
First, you will make a stop at Maarmorilik (the old mining place) and have lunch there just like Alfred Wegener did.
Later you will arrive to Qaamarujuk, hike up to the ice cap and have dinner there.
After dinner, you will continue for a small hike on the Inland Ice where you will spend the night in a tent pitched in an area protected from the wind and cold.

DAY 4: hiking and sailing back to Uummannaq

Wake up the next day and get ready to sail back to Uummannaq.
After you arrive you will have lunch with UFT staff, prepare to go for a city walk and hike to Santa Claus’s summerhouse.
Finally, you will finish this amazing experience by sharing dinner with locals.
